The House’s new initiative aims to evaluate YouTube and Netflix; comprehend

A proposed legislation in the Chamber of Deputies may lead to notable alterations in on-demand video services like Netflix and YouTube’s movie store in Brazil. The bill aims to regulate these services and introduce the Contribution to the Development of the National Cinematic Industry (Condecine) to support local cinema.

The camera examines a program that seeks to evaluate YouTube and Netflix.

The project authored by Senator Nelsinho Trad (PSD-MS) modifies the Provisional Measure 2228/01 and the Pay TV Act, subjecting VoD services to principles such as artistic freedom, cultural diversity, and the promotion of Brazilian audiovisual content.

The project also places various responsibilities on streaming platforms.

    • To ensure a consistent presence of Brazilian audiovisual content in the catalog, a minimum quantity will be included based on the catalogue size (e.g., for a catalogue with two thousand products, at least 100 should be Brazilian).
    • To provide Ancine with documentation regarding the invoicing and cataloging of Brazilian audiovisual material.
    • Television equipment makers must refrain from engaging in anti-competitive behavior when providing content on their platforms.
    • VoD service providers that fail to meet their obligations will receive warnings and fines, including daily fines as determined by Ancine.

How will the calculation be carried out?

The bill’s text specifies that the Condecine will be levied yearly with increasing rates depending on the companies’ revenue. The regulations are as outlined below:

    • Companies that invoice more than R$ 96 million will be subject to a 3% rate.
    • Companies with invoicing ranging from R$ 4.8 million to R$ 96 million will be charged a fee of 1.5%.
    • Services costing less than R $ 4.8 million will be exempt from tax payment.

The tax will be cut in half if half of the service catalog’s content is from the country. Companies need to differentiate profits from streaming services from other services like advertising and sports content to determine the tax. Educational journalism and audiovisual content will not be subject to Condecine.

    What should be done next?

The project will undergo a thorough analysis by the Committees of Culture, Communication, Finance and Taxation, and Constitution and Justice. If there are modifications, it will go back to the Senate for another vote; otherwise, it will proceed to receive presidential approval.

  • Google is allowing fraudulent advertisements on YouTube.

Google is allowing fraudulent advertisements on YouTube.

X users, previously on Twitter and now on YouTube, have recently been targeted with suspicious ads falsely implicating host Luciano Huck in a scandal with Banco do Brasil regarding cryptocurrencies. This raises the question of whether everything can be monetized.

    What is happening?

Fraudulent ads are appearing on popular online platforms like X and YouTube, directing users to fake websites that resemble trusted sites like Economic Value and G1. These ads promote cryptocurrency investments under the guise of the Huck brand.

A recent example involves fake news about Luciano Huck allegedly discussing cryptocurrencies on the “Lady Night” show hosted by Tatá Werneck. The false report suggests Banco do Brasil was taking legal action against Huck, but BB’s press office confirmed this to be untrue. G1 has also labeled the news as fake.

@googlebrasil permits this kind of advertisement on @YouTubeBrasil, showing complicity with spreading Fake News, prioritizing profit.

The website’s URL does not pertain to Economic Value; instead, it belongs to unfamiliar domains like mapsofsuccess.me and animalsinsight.com, which are not relevant to the platform.

Keep watching out for those advertisements. They are not genuine.

Is everything valuable in terms of money?

Fake news is alarming due to how easily it spreads on major platforms like X and YouTube, despite being recognized as fraudulent. The algorithms in place are unable to prevent such content from reaching a vast audience.

How valuable is money in this scenario, considering that major companies like Google (which owns YouTube) allow these ads to circulate without thorough scrutiny, thus raising concerns about these companies’ responsibility in protecting users from fraud.

Social media platforms and video websites benefit from these advertisements, but users are the ones who suffer, falling for false promises and losing money. It is necessary to reconsider priorities and expect greater accountability from the companies controlling the online realm. Safeguarding a secure online environment should take precedence over maximizing profits.

YouTube needs to have a clear status bar on Android.

YouTube is introducing a new feature for Android users that will enhance their user experience beyond just changing the appearance. The update will include a transparent status bar, replacing the previous solid one that appeared when scrolling through Home feeds and applications.

    YouTube’s new see-through status bar.

The status bar on YouTube for Android used to be solid, making it opaque while scrolling through the Home and Subscription feeds, thus visually separating the content from system icons like the clock, notifications, and battery status.

This method, while practical, resulted in a minor gap between the interface components, particularly when contrasted with other parts of the application like the ambient mode of the video player, which already offered a more engaging and seamless look.

The new update makes the status bar transparent, enabling video thumbnails to show beneath the bar icons. This creates visual continuity, enhancing the interface’s cohesion and fluidity for a more immersive experience with videos having more visual presence without a solid bar interruption.

Several devices have already acquired new features.

The new see-through status bar started appearing on various devices starting with YouTube version 19.37.35 for Android. However, not all users have access to it yet as the rollout is happening slowly, and some may not see the change right away based on their Android version and device.

While the update may not be available to everyone yet, it is expected that more individuals will begin noticing this change on their devices in the upcoming weeks. This gradual release strategy is commonly used for updates of major applications to enable the company to assess new features with a limited user group before a full rollout.

Get ready to spend more money! YouTube Premium is expected to increase in price soon.

YouTube Premium is on the verge of becoming pricier in Brazil. Reports suggest that prices have already gone up in some countries, particularly in the family plan, which saw a 44.44% increase. While the specific adjustment for Brazil is unknown, a similar hike can be anticipated.

The family plan costs 44.44% more in Europe.

YouTube Premium prices have increased notably in countries such as Belgium, the Netherlands, and Italy, with the family plan rising from €18 to €26 and the individual plan increasing from €12 to €14, representing a 16.67% rise.

Other nations, including Switzerland and Sweden, experienced price hikes for their YouTube Premium subscriptions, leading to widespread discontent among users who now view the service as one of the priciest streaming options available, surpassing rivals such as Spotify and Apple Music.

Many argue that YouTube Premium might be losing its edge compared to other music and video streaming platforms due to the wide range of options available in the market.

    How about Brazil?

There is a possibility that the rises seen in Europe may soon impact Brazil, although the exact extent of this change is uncertain. YouTube is expected to mirror the trend of increases in the country, based on the patterns of other platforms.

YouTube is introducing artificial intelligence for Android users to determine who will have access.

YouTube has introduced a new conversational AI feature that can respond to queries related to the video being viewed. This feature is exclusive to YouTube Premium subscribers using an Android device.

An artificial intelligence tool is introduced on YouTube.

YouTube had announced its plan to introduce a conversational AI tool by the end of the previous year, but there have been no updates on its progress. The idea was to develop a separate tool enabling users to ask questions about the video while watching it.

YouTube has officially confirmed that users in the United States will soon have access to this conversational AI tool on their devices. The feature will initially be available to YouTube Premium members only, with no details provided on potential expansion to other users in the US or globally. Information about the availability of this functionality in Brazil is still pending.

The official Twitter account for YouTube (X) also verified the new feature.

Our conversational AI tool will now be available to all YouTube Premium members in the US who use Android devices. You can utilize it to delve deeper into the content you enjoy by inquiring about what you are currently watching or requesting similar video suggestions.

The new AI functionality is subtly integrated into the YouTube app, with the comment icon on Android showing an additional page indicator. Swiping left on the comment card reveals a new “Ask” option.

You can touch the card to access a page that looks like a typical chatbot interface. When you hit “Resume video,” the instruction is quickly added to the chatbot, creating a summary of the YouTube AI model, which is believed to be connected to Gemini.

YouTube is concealing the “Skip” button in order to display additional ads.

If you don’t subscribe to YouTube Premium at the monthly cost of R$ 24.90, you will likely have to endure multiple ads while watching videos on the platform. Previously, the ‘Skip’ button provided relief by allowing users to bypass ads and watch videos more quickly. However, YouTube recently made a slight adjustment, making it somewhat more challenging to locate the skip button.

YouTube modifies the ‘Skip’ button on its platform.

Previously, a timer displayed at the bottom right corner showed the time left until the skip option became available. Now, a yellow line moves across the bottom of the video, adjusting its speed based on the ad’s length. If the ad is lengthy, the yellow line progresses rapidly until the skip button is shown. In cases where skipping is not possible, the yellow line represents the entire ad duration.

Some Reddit users have reported that YouTube is experimenting with black overlays to conceal the skip button, making it harder to ignore ads. This tactic is part of a larger series of tests the platform is conducting to determine the most effective way to increase ad viewing time.

YouTube has not issued an official statement regarding these adjustments. However, these slight modifications are intended to boost ad revenue, which totaled $31.51 billion in 2023, marking an almost 8% increase from the previous year. Even small changes can have a significant financial effect.
