Turkey and Russia both banned the Discord messaging platform for failing to comply with legal requests for information and for not removing prohibited content.
Discord made a remark about locks.
The company, located in San Francisco, stated that they are looking into the reports about Discord being unavailable in Russia and Turkey.
The blocking decision was made public on the official website of Turkey’s Information and Communication Technologies Authority.
A court in Ankara has ordered the blocking of Discord in Turkey over concerns of potential criminal activities like “child sexual abuse and obscenity,” similar to the situation with Telegram being blocked in Russia for not assisting in identifying suspected crimes on the platform.
The blockade was implemented following public anger in Turkey over the recent killing of two women in Istanbul by a 19-year-old. Some users on Discord have been seen applauding the crime on social media.
The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, Abdulkadir Uraloglu, stated that the design of the Discord platform makes it difficult for authorities to monitor and take action against illegal or criminal content shared on it.
Security forces are unable to view content directly and can only take action when users report the shared content, stated the official in parliament.
Discord’s refusal to disclose user information has led to the blocking of access by security units.
