Microsoft recently released the highly anticipated Windows 11 24H2 update, which introduces various new features and enhancements. Unfortunately, users encountered a troublesome issue where the update consumes approximately 9 GB of hard drive space that cannot be reclaimed even after attempting to delete the files, along with the appearance of the dreaded blue screen of death.
The issue of the 8.63 GB “unseen”
After installing the update, users noticed that their systems were using 8.63 GB more storage than anticipated. These extra files are found in the “Windows Update Cleanup” section of the system’s temporary file management tool. Despite the option to delete these files, the command doesn’t work, and the space stays occupied.
After major Windows updates, temporary files may remain on the system that can be deleted later. The Storage Sense feature typically handles this task. However, due to a bug in the 2024 update, these files may not be removed despite the system indicating that they have been deleted.
The issue has occurred on multiple computers, as reported by users on various forums and technology websites. Although Windows has permitted the removal of these files for many years, it seems unlikely that Microsoft purposely intended for the 8.63 GB to be occupied by hidden files.
